The existence and preservation of the 500€ banknote has been the subject of intense discussions for some time now. Actually it should be decided that the existence of this note is limited and is not renewed to the 2nd Euro series. The production has already been stopped in 2014. However, the abolition should take place successively and the banknotes remain valid. The exchange should therefore be possible indefinitely with the national central banks. Over time, the banknotes are collected and held. Till 2016 around 600 million 500-Euro-Notes were in circulation, which should be replaced by euro notes with lower value and also the 100 and 200 Euronotes of the second Euro series then should already been put into circulation.
